WTF! Man Hangs Self After Killing Wife In Ebonyi

Mgbaleze Isu community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was in a mournful mood weekend as a 36-year-old man, Chijioke Ani, and his wife were found dead in their farm.

Mr. Ani was found dangling from a tree in the farm and his wife battered, in a manner locals suspected to be murder.

According to a local chief, Sylvanus Ani, the couple was seen last on their
way to the farm.

Mr. Ani said, ‘’Both of them went to the farm and did not return home; at a time everyone was disturbed so we informed other villagers that helped and mobilized themselves and went in search of them and finally found the wife, Ngozi Chijioke, lying dead in her pool of blood with marks of violence all over her body while Chijioke Ani was found hanging on a tree’’.

Another villager, Okechukwu Jude, said the mysterious death had given room for insinuations.
“We urge the relevant authorities to ascertain the cause of their death and
ensure that such does not in the area again.

“It will take us a long time to recover from this shock because the incident is gory and unprecedented,” he said.
Police spokesman, George Okafor, confirmed the incident.

He said the man may have killed the wife and hanged himself.

“Yes, it is true that the couple died at the farm but I am thinking that may be one thing led to another and the man killed his wife and hanged himself because the area is peaceful, no any dispute in the community,” he said.

He assured that the police will get to the root of the incident as investigation into the matter has commenced.

2000 Nigerian Children Die Every Day Of Preventable Diseases- NGO

According to One Campaign, an international organisation, 2000 children and 158 women die every day in Nigeria due to poor access to basic healthcare.

According to the Non Governmental Organization, 750,000 children die every year in Nigeria before they were five years old because of pneumonia, cholera, malaria and other preventable disease.

The Nigeria Country Representative of One Campaign, Edwin Ikhuoria, said the National Health Act could “save the lives of over 3 million mothers, newborns and children under-five years by 2022 if fully implemented by allocating 15 per cent of the nation’s budget to the health sector.”

“This year N250bn was allocated to the Ministry of Health and its agencies. Today, we are in August, the question is, apart from salaries, how much has been released for capital projects and things like vaccines?

So unless transparent investments are made in the health sector, we cannot achieve results.

Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, has denied the arrest of its members by the Nigerian Military.

A statement posted on NDA website on Sunday by its spokesperson, Brig.Gen Moduch Agbinibo, said the Nigerian Military had continued to deceive Nigerians and indeed the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

It reads: “We made it clear that the Nigeria Military is using sleepers’ agents to track or checkmate the activities and operation of the Niger delta avengers. But the more they try the more they run into crisis with their employed sleeper agents.

“Stanley Tonghan and Felix Miyenminiye that were arrested and paraded by the Nigeria Navy Delta are few of the sleeper agents working for Nigeria Military in conjunction with one Ayiri Emani and Michael Johnny.

“The Suspects (Tonghan and Felix Miyenminiye) was paid 5 Million Naira to give Nigeria military intelligent on the activities of NDA. On failing to deliver, the suspects were arrested and tagged NDA members. What a shame.

“The group disowned the duo of Tonghan and Miyenminiye saying, they are “not member of NDA, we don’t know or have any connection with them”.

Condemning Navy Commanding Officer, Commodore Joseph Dzune, for misleading the President, the Avengers said, “The Navy Commanding Office NNS Delta, Warri (Commodore Joseph Dzunve) is trying to impress his Boss in Abuja by arresting sleeper agents recruited by his predecessor.

“Since we (NDA) started the struggle none of our operatives has been arrested. All those in detention in the name of NDA are not part of NDA the world should know this.

“Nigeria military has not seen embarrassment. NDA will keep embarrassing you because the only thing you are good at doing in the Niger Delta region is arrest and killing of innocent citizens of the Niger Delta in the name of looking for NDA and illegal bunkering.

“If the Nigeria military is serious about arresting NDA let them come to the creeks of the Niger Delta. That is where we dwell not the city. If I, Brig.Gen Moduch Agbinibo, was the Commanding Officer NNS Delta, Commodore Joseph Dzunve, and commander of the so-called Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, I would have been in the creeks instead of sitting at the comfort of my air-conditioned office.

“To the elders of the Niger Delta, hope it clear to you our elders that the Buhari led government is not reliable, reasonable, responsible and not ready to dialogue. Can you tell the world the government official you been dialoguing with? Is it the President? Or is there any committee that is set up for it?

“We respect you our elders, as such stop behaving, as the Niger Delta is a seized region and stop acting like you are begging the government for dialogue. The worse the government will do is to bombard our villages and towns in the name of looking for NDA. So our elders should trend carefully with the Nigeria government.

“The reason behind military harassment of towns and villages in the Niger Delta is because NDA have not confronted the Nigeria military in battle. We are not scared in confronting you. The creeks of the Niger Delta belong to us so defeating the Nigeria military is not hard for us.

“We have made it clear in many occasions that our business is to cripple the Nigeria economy not to kill military. The Nigeria military should not we (NDA) avoiding them is a sign of weakness”.

The Chief of Army of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has charged personnel of the army to be committed and keep fit always, saying there is no room for laxity in the military.

Buratai gave the charge while addressing 200 cadets of Regular Course 63, who had concluded their training, shortly after inaugurating the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) base camp in Jos.

He also reminded them that the military had done the country proud and must be ready to continue to make the military proud.

“I want to tell you that in the military there is no room for laxity. Whatever we do, we must do it with precision and a deep sense of commitment.

“One thing that is associated with the military, apart from discipline is exercise to keep fit always.

“I expect you to be at the top at all times, physically,’’ Buratai charged.

The chief of army staff stressed that with current security challenges in the country, especially insurgency in the North East; officers and men were expected to be committed, precise and physically fit.

“The reality is that in the North East you will encounter unexpected ambushes and indeed IEDs – Improvised Explosive Devices, where the Boko Haram terrorists operate.

“You must be conscious of these threats in the theatre and wherever you operate at the end of your training here.

“And after being commissioned, I am sure some of you will find your way to the North East. So, you better make up your mind.

“You are going to be relied upon as commission officers, you must maintain that standard of discipline, you must remain physically fit, no room for any laxity,’’ he told the cadets.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training the cadets underwent in the base included field, leadership and adventure, a mock war, depicting the situation in the North East.

Wow!! Besiktas Football Club, Turkey Sign Amokachi Twin Sons

Former Nigeria international, Daniel Amokachi, has described himself as a proud father after his twin sons Nazim and Kalim Amokachi completed a move to join Turkish champions, Besiktas.

Although the financial details of the deal have not been made public, both players were pictured in Besiktas jersey in an official unveiling after they signed a one-year contract with their new club.

Amokachi, aside announcing the deal for his 20-year old sons on his Facebook page, also posted a short message on his twitter handle @FrenzziiiBull where he wrote Two sons – one proud father. Thanks to @JSHercules and @besiktas for giving us a chance. #beşiktaş #hercules

It is understood that the twins flew to Istanbul to undergo one-week trial with the U21 team of Besiktas in the end of July.

During the trial Nazim Amokachi and Kalim Amokachi impressed the club’s sport management and the boys were requested to stay for another week after which contracts were signed, JSHercules reported on its website.

Continually hoping to be like their father or perhaps surpass him, the attack playing minded twins had years ago also undergone trials at Everton, another club their father played for during his active days but they failed to get a deal.

Daniel Amokachi, from 1996 to 1999, played 77 matches for Besiktas in which he struck 19 goals.

During his time in Turkey, Amokachi popularly referred to as the Bull, was a cult figure among the fans winning hearts across the country and even among the supporters of other clubs, the JSHercules website said.

It is yet to be seen if his sons’ performances will follow such high pedestal even as their father has started carving a niche for himself in coaching, being one of the very few African coaches heading an European club.

I Find This ‘Baby Bump’ Thing Very Irritating – Chimamanda Adichie Reveals

At a time when it has become a trend for celebrities to flaunt their pregnancies online, award-winning writer, Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie, has said that pregnancy is a sacred state that a woman ought to be discreet about.

According to her, this is the reason she did not make it a public matter when she was expecting her child.

In a recent interview with UK’s Channel 4 News, where she spoke about racism in America and the UK, among other matters, Chimamanda said, “I wanted my pregnancy to be something I shared with the people I love, with the people who know me. There is a kind of pregnancy as a trendy thing that I find very uncomfortable with and I deeply dislike expressions like ‘baby bump’.

“I find it very irritating. It was a very deeply introspective time, thinking about (how) my life is going to change forever and the enormousness of bringing a baby into the world. It was a sacred time for me and I wanted to share it with the people I love.”

Such approach to family matters also affects the way she has been keeping her child who, she, for instance, would want to lead an ordinary but meaningful life.

“I don’t want her to think it is normal to have her picture in newspapers, because it is not. Just because your mother happens to write and sometimes have her pictures in the newspapers, doesn’t mean you get to,” Chimamanda adds.

Although Chimamanda has lived in the US where she has phenomenally flourished as a writer, she is one new-generation Nigerian novelist who has not lost a sense of home.

From one book to the other, she edifies the Igbo spirit and seeks to get answers to socio-political questions that Nigeria still battle with.

Based on the stories she passionately tells in her works, such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Amerikana, she seems to have redefined phenomena such as westernisation, colonisation and globalisation – as she has proved that you can be at home even when you live away from home.

[Review] The Signs Begin To Look Good For “Jos To The World” Album By Ice Prince

Ice Prince has his third studio album steaming and ready to be unveiled. He writes about it, tweets it at every turn, shares pictures when he feels the urge to connect, and sometimes when he isn’t exactly in the mood, something drops to give us all refreshed hope in the project.

This year hasn’t exactly been kind to the rapper. After having a decent 2015 where the “Trash Can” EP and couple of videos kept him ticking the relevant boxes in the music industry, he snagged time with ROC Nation to discuss a deal that brought him the photo with Jay Z. The single ‘Boss’ kept his name in the clubs and parties, while ‘Feelings’ showed off his Trap exterior, and also shoved his girlfriend, Maima Nkewa into our noses.
So it was no surprise when drama came from the relationship department this year. His girlfriend was accused of cheating on him, and the news mill gave him good coverage of the events. Ice Prince came out unreservedly defending his love. So heroic.

In the music department, he hasn’t fared either. ROC Nation kept their deal to themselves, at least publicly, and showered the attention on Don Jazzy’s Tiwa Savage who has signed up with them on a management deal. His plans for a new album had hit the wrong note with his first single ‘Chike’, which was deemed unoriginal. Ice Prince was in the music wilderness right now. That lonely, cold and infertile creative place where there is no sun, joy and inspiration. The rapper is feeling the blues and Nigeria had found him out.
But he came out of it, and in style too.

A new song, ‘Exceellency’ featuring South African DJ Buckz has pop hit written all over it. But it is the preview of ‘Teardrops’, a song off his “Jos To The World” album that has people throwing him back their love and their support. Ice Prince had dug into his creative arsenal, and came out with introspection. The video preview kept everything on a premium level.

Now fans are excited again.

Fandom in Nigeria is a fickle business, with the rapper actively judged by what’s on the table, not what has been done in the past. Previous works give an artiste celebrity status, but it is his constant releases of genius that keeps that fire burning bright, and maintains the goodwill. Ice Prince has clawed back into the good graces of a lot of fans with a song and a preview. This has made his album easier to anticipate, and keep fingers crossed.

But the jury is still out. Ice Prince has flattered to deceive in the past, and many aren’t biting his bullet this time, hoping that he impresses with a solid LP, but also not giving away their stance so easily. Until the work drops.

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in the morning of Sunday, August 14 tested the administrator of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie and leader, Nigeria Navy Service (NNS) Delta, Commodore Joseph Dzunye, advising both men to go to the springs of the Niger Delta, rather than working from the urban areas and catch “sleeper” specialists, who they call as Avengers individuals to keeping in mind the end goal to get support from their top officers.

Catholic Priest Sacked After He Was Discovered To Have 2 Wives

54 year old Reverend Father Peter Zuni of the Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, Kakuri parish, Kaduna State, was recently disrobed and sacked by the Archbishop of the Kaduna Archdiocese, Bishop Ndagoso Manoso (pictured above) after his secret wife stormed the church to disclose her secret relationship with the Catholic priest.

The news came as a shock to the church because according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, only unmarried men are ordained into the priesthood as they are obligated to swear to an oath of celibacy and observe perfect and perpetual service for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.

This, it is believed, would enable the priests to easily remain close to Christ with an undivided heart, and dedicate themselves more freely to the service of God and the congregation.

According to The Sun, one of the wives is already late while the surviving one who blew the whistle about three weeks ago over the secret marriage is said to be nursing a child for the embattled priest.

Speaking on the development, the Archbishop of Kaduna Catholic Diocese, Bishop Ndagoso Manoso said Father Zuni’s second wife had approached him in his office with a baby and claimed Zuni was the father of her child. After due investigation by his office, it was confirmed that the priest was her secret husband.

“It is very unfortunate that this thing had to happen in my diocese. It is not an easy thing for me; if I tell you what I have been going through in the past few weeks over this issue; it has not been easy for me. Father Zuni was my classmate; we spent seven years in the seminary. At a time he proceeded to Kaduna Polytechnic and read Accounting.

But this thing happened and nobody knew. But he has to face the sanction. We sacked and disrobed him because what he did is no longer compatible with his vocation as a priest. It was not true that he was transferred to any village.

He was about to be transferred on normal routine, but when I heard of this story, I had to cancel the transfer and sacked him. It is true that he had affairs with two women and they both had children for him, but one of the women is late already.

We are not God, we did not know on time until now that he was having affairs with two women. The church said the priest has to go because the church doesn’t allow priests to marry.

So he had to go and look after his children and his matrimonial home. You can now imagine what the priest is going through, either spiritually or psychologically. He must be going through hell on earth. This is my concern for him now.

The woman and the kids will be going through trauma also. I have been trying to see how I can help him, but I don’t think I have the skills to help him. But he needs help to come to terms with reality.

By December he will be 30 years in the priesthood, and he is now 54 years old, so at this age what can he do with his life. Nobody can employ him now.

He spent seven years in the seminary and 30 years in the priesthood, and that is 37 years, so what can he do with his life at 54? The church too is going through a lot of trauma, so we need everybody’s prayers for us to put this incident behind us.”he said in tears

Meanwhile the man in the eye of the storm, Father Zuni, has neither denied nor confirmed the allegation. In a telephone interview he said

“I find it difficult myself to believe what people are saying about me. I will not comment on it now. I will follow due process to invite you for an interview, but I am afraid, the newspaper of the archdiocese, The Cross News, may carry this story before you (Sunday Sun)”.

Linda Ikeji Apologizes To Mayowa Ahmed’s Family Over False Scam Story

She released the statement on her blog today, read below:

People who know me well will tell you that the easiest and fastest way to get money out of me is to tell me you’re sick. I hate seeing people that helpless. Over the years, I’ve donated and also used my platform to raise money for several sick people, including Mayowa Ahmed.

Early morning on July 28th, I received a call saying the #SaveMayowa campaign was a scam. That the lady was terminally ill and the family had no intentions of using the money raised for her health to treat her as they had no invite from the hospital in Atlanta, neither did she even have a visa to the US.

They wanted me to blog it quickly so people could stop donating. I found it hard to believe at first but it was coming from people who were directly involved in raising money for the sick girl. I sent someone to LUTH to investigate, he got there and found chaos. The Police was already involved, people were being questioned, some folks were shouting, he spoke to people in the hospital and many seemed confused. I spoke with those who had called me, and they said 1000%, the whole thing was a scam.

And I sincerely believe that at the time they told me this, they genuinely believed it to be a fact. I don’t think it was done maliciously. After they sent me documents showing the hospital in Atlanta was not really involved in Mayowa’s treatment and LUTH medical directors denied knowledge of a fund raising for the sick girl, I believed it to also be a fact! And I wrote it. My mistake, I think, was owning the story, I probably should have quoted them. And maybe investigated more. My apologies to the family! The post has since been taken down.

After investing properly, the police found it wasn’t a scam, that it was more a miscommunication between the parties helping to raise funds and the girl’s family. I spoke about the issue with the Lagos police PPRO and she assured me that the family didn’t have bad intentions.

What I am happy about is that; even if the family had had dubious intentions initially, now they can’t do any of that, as everyone is now watching. So maybe a good thing came out of the whole chaos.

The happy news is that Mayowa has been flown to South Africa for treatment. She left Nigeria on Thursday August 11th.

May God use her case to show that He is God!

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA AND NIGER DELTA AVENGERS ARE INSEPARABLE IN THEIR QUEST FOR BIAFRA RESTORATION: NO FREEDOM FOR NNAMDI KANU NO PEACE
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) hereby categorically state that we and our brothers the Niger Delta Avengers (N.D.A.) are inseparable in our quest for Biafra restoration. Just as N.D.A. stated in their demands which the Nigerian Government is very much aware of but has chosen to ignore, there will be no negotiation if there is no freedom for the leader of IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Nigeria will avert imminent doom only if Buhari is compelled by civilized nations to obey existing court orders and release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally.
Trying the discredited divide and rule tactics of using the media to claim Nnamdi Kanu denied N.D.A. in order to engineer acrimony and hatred between him and N.D.A. has failed woefully. South South and South East are united in this noble quest for freedom and no amount of media manipulation can alter this fact. Only if Buhari knows who Nnamdi Kanu truly is or the amount of influence he commands among the people of South East and South South he won't listen to the lies Lawal Daura of DSS and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have been feeding him.

Although we acknowledge that our lawyers spoke out of turn in a recent press conference, we are also aware that Mr. Rochas Okorocha who parades himself to the contrary as an Igbo man has been working as a front man for Muhammadu Buhari to penetrate and compromise IPOB governing structure and our lawyers. We are aware of the grand conspiracy orchestrated by Rochas Okorocha to penetrate IPOB by all and any means necessary. We know that one of our lawyers has been meeting with Okorocha clandestinely in the past few weeks just like Buhari through Lawal Daura of DSS has been doing through inducements and threats. Some of our lawyers are currently being investigated by the EFCC at the behest of Daura of DSS over a land case settled years ago, in order to unsettle them sufficiently to turn to DSS informants and ultimately undermine the legal defence of our leader as was the case with Vincent Obetta.

In spite of all these shenanigans by Buhari through Daura of DSS and his co-jesters in the media peddling falsehood about negotiations that our leader never consented to, IPOB worldwide is unwavering, determined and resolute under the supreme command of Nnamdi Kanu. No other person dead or alive has the right to command or can command IPOB whether that person is residing in Government house in Owerri or from a private hospital in Nnewi. Only Nnamdi Kanu can tell us in IPOB what to do and we obey. Anybody else attempting to do so will be comprehensively disgraced.
IPOB rank and file is with their leader Nnamdi Kanu and we speak with one voice. Our decision remains that there will be NO negotiations with Nigeria until Buhari obeys court orders for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu.
We would like to remind everyone that whatever statement or information is provided by IPOB either through our spokespersons or live on Radio Biafra broadcast by our Deputy Director is exactly the mind of our leader Nnamdi Kanu because he trained us to always put the needs of Biafra restoration first and never to retreat nor surrender. From the time of the arrest of our leader till date he has never at any time disputed publicly or in private, through his wife or family members any press statement issued by IPOB official spokespersons.
Furthermore, IPOB is aware that Buhari is planning to kill our leader Nnamdi Kanu and is doing so with active connivance of some Igbo politicians with certain executive members of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. We warn Buhari and his cohorts that the murder of Nnamdi Kanu will spell doom not just for Nigeria but the entire sub-region because the fall out will be too disastrous for a sane mind to contemplate. Anybody from the government of Nigeria or Ohanaeze Ndigbo that thinks that Nnamdi Kanu can be another Ken Saro-Wiwa or M.K.O. Abiola is digging their own grave.

IPOB is a global phenomenon, unprecedented in the history of freedom fighting anywhere on earth. We are all over the world with fanatical following. That IPOB has vowed to maintain a peaceful approach to liberating Biafra from the contraption called Nigeria does not translate to allowing Buhari and his conniving so-called Igbo elites to assassinate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and go scot-free. That will never happen.
We would like to state that IPOB is aware of the fact that all over the world terms for self-determination is always negotiated. But what we insist on is that for Buhari to start any negotiation with IPOB on a peaceful exit of Biafra from Nigeria he must first obey court orders on the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. Buhari should also release all Biafrans illegally detained in various prisons in Nigeria.
However IPOB would like to take this opportunity to commend the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) of Nigeria, Hon. Abubakar Malami (SAN) and all those endowed with common sense who have come to understand that all IPOB family members arrested must be released unconditionally because our quest is the restoration of Biafra and not to take over the rulership of Nigeria.

It is instructive to note that the AGF dropped all the charges against IPOB members in Abia State even when Okezie Ikpeazu Abia State governor and other killers of innocent Biafrans in government houses were hell-bent on forging ahead with the ridiculous treasonable felony charges. Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and those like him specifically directed Hausa-Fulani controlled JTF to undertake the indiscriminate slaughter of fellow Biafrans in Aba on more than two occasions. Their judgement is coming and Nigeria they so diligently serve now will abandon them as is happening already with Ikpeazu.

It is a fact that some people within the Judiciary know that there is no evidence of treasonable felony in the case against Nnamdi Kanu which was why a more learned and highly respected judge like Ademola dismissed these charges at the same Federal High Court John Tsoho is now sitting today to make a mockery of himself and justice.
Finally, we want to reiterate that IPOB and N.D.A. share the same ideology and philosophy concerning the liberation of Biafra from Nigeria and this will be the centrepiece of any negotiation that will take place after the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. We re-emphasize our stance that there is no negotiation going on at this time and that IPOB and N.D.A. are inseparable in their objectives and expected outcomes.
It is either we get Biafra or we die trying to get Biafra. There is no middle ground, there is no compromising this cardinal point. Let it be known to humanity that there will be no negotiation without first effecting the release of Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally.
The restoration of the blessed nation of Biafra is a divine mission from God Almighty of which Nnamdi Kanu is the chosen messenger.
We are unstoppable, unchangeable, irresistible, and irreversible whether Buhari and Lawal Daura like it or not!!!

Abuja-Kaduna Speed Train Service Records N5m Income In 2 Weeks

The Abuja-Kaduna train service recorded N5 million income within the first two weeks of operation, Mr Fidet Ikhiria, Acting Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has said.

Ikhiria made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while travelling on the train from Abuja to Kaduna on Saturday.

The Managing Director of NAN, Mr Bayo Onanuga and the Editor-in-Chief, NAN, Mr Ado Lawal, were also on board.

NAN recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari recently inaugurated the 1.46 billion dollars Abuja-Kaduna train service was inaugurated on July 26 by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ikhiria said that he did not have record of the daily income of the service.

“In the first week of operation, we made N2.2 million; in the second week, we made N2.9 million.

“This is the third week of operation; the last week report showed that we had almost 5,000 passengers in six days.

”We have capacity for 320 passengers per trip; for now, the maximum we can carry per trip is 320.

”So, for a day, the maximum number of passengers we can have is 1000,” he said.

Ikhiria said that fencing of the tracks would commence before the end of August.

He acknowledged that there were some operational lapses on the route, and said that the management was working toward addressing them.

He said that some of the staff had yet to get used to the seat numbering as it was different from what was obtainable in the previous trains.

According to the managing director, the coaches are overwhelmed by the number of people coming on board.

“Some passengers with economy class tickets are coming to sit on the first class coach because the economy class is filled up.

”We are going to do more enlightenment on this at the station and communities levels.”

On the speed of the train, he said that the parameter for speed was not coach but track which, according to him, was designed according to specification.

He said the train moved at 90 kilometres per hour from the initial 70 kilometres per hour but would get to 150 kilometres per hour in due course.

“The slow speed of the train is to avoid accidents as people living close to the tracks have yet to get used to the movement of train,’’ he explained.

Okhiria said that efforts were being made to beef up security at the stations and on board the train.

“By next week, our scanners will be in place; I am also discussing with Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to deploy more men.

“We have armed policemen on board and some security personnel without uniform,” he said

He added that efforts were also being made to install internet facilities in the train.

In an interview, the Managing Director of NAN, Mr Bayo Onanuga, who was on board the train, lauded the service and said that Nigerians were beginning to enjoy train services the way they did in the 60s and the 70s.

Onanuga, who was in company with the Editor-in-Chief of NAN, Mr Lawal Ado, however, said that NRC needed to do more work to improve on the train services.

”Apparently, NRC underestimated the interest of our people in boarding train.

”They need to acquire more trains; they need to increase the capacity and increase the frequency of movement.

”They need to provide food and other services such as internet.

“It is a good one; we made it to Kaduna in two and half hours,” he said.

Another passenger, Mr Kayode Emmanuel, told NAN that the system of boarding the train was chaotic and disorganised.

He said that the management should know the number of passengers each coach contained and sell tickets accordingly to avoid crowded coaches.

On his part, Isa Yusuf, who was also on board, said that he expected that passengers on the first-class coach would be given light refreshment.

Stop Match-Making ‘Brothers And Sisters’ – Adeboye Warns RCCG Pastors

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has banned Pastors in the church from match-making members.

Adeboye at yesterday’s service which marked the end of the 64th Annual Convention said there should be no more cases of arranging brothers and sisters for marriage.

“Don’t be entangled with marriage among members because you will bear the consequences,” Adeboye said.

“It is not your duty to arrange a brother and a sister for marriage because you cannot arrange their fruitfulness. Don’t get involved in marriage by proxy.”

Adeboye urged pastors to teach their spiritual children to seek the face of the Lord in marriage because every marriage has its challenges.

Meanwhile, seven new AGOs seven new Assistant General Overseers (AGOs) were announced to take over from the six Assistant General Overseers who retired.

They are: Pastors Ezekiel A. Odeyemi, Elijah O. Daramola, Johnson F. Odesola and Joseph Obayemi who are presently members of the Governing Council of the RCCG and Special Assistants to the G.O.

Others are Pastor Olu Obanure, Pastor Ayo Adeloye and Pastor Peter Amekhienan who are presently Special Assistants to the General Overseer in West Coast 1, East Africa and Southern Africa Region 1 respectively.

New Special Assistants to the GO are: Pastors Johnson Tomisin Kalejaiye, Brown Oyitso, Okey Mofunnaya, Peter Olawale and Belemina Obunge were appointed Special Assistants to the General Overseer.

Kalejaiye, a Regional Evangelist is now the Special Assistant to the G.O. on Evangelism. Oyitso, Chairman of Central Missions Board, is now the Special Assistant to the G.O. on Missions while Mofunnaya, Head of Security, is now the Special Assistant to the G.O. on Security.

Olawale, National Prayer Coordinator, is the new Special Assistant to the G.O. on Prayers while Obunge, in charge of Youth Affairs, becomes the Special Assistant to the G.O. on Special Duties.

Having attained the retirement age of 70 years, Pastor (Mrs.) Oretayo Adetola, Special Assistant to the G.O. on Women Affairs, Pastor Gbadebo Lawal, Special Assistant on Prayers and some others were retired.

Others are Pastors Peter Egho, Olonode Babatunde, John Adewunmi, David Taiwo Ajose, Oludele Olatunji, Pastor (Mrs) Funmilola Ishola, Pastor (Mrs) Deborah Folarin and Pastor (Mrs) Bolatito Bamishaye.

N11.23 Billion Fraud Uncovered At NPA, Three Popular Banks Involved

The new management of the Nigerian Ports Authority has uncovered fraud totalling N11.23 billion at the agency, officials familiar with the matter have told PREMIUM TIMES.
The officials said the Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, and her executive directors have since their assumption of duties on July 18 been poring through the books of the maritime agency.

So far, this newspaper learnt, a series of transactions suspected to be fraudulent and amounting to N11.23billion have been uncovered.

Of the amount, $24.1million (N7.47billion at N310 per dollar) was traced to Heritage Bank, the successor bank to the defunct Societe Generale Bank owned by the Saraki family.

Insiders said the funds were collected by the bank as revenue for NPA, but that the financial house, in collusion with some officials of the maritime agency, failed to move it into NPA’s Treasury Single Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“They were hiding the money there, and earning interests,” one official said.
The former management of the agency also failed to disclose the funds in the handover note passed to the Ms. Bala Usman-led team, our sources said.

Another six million Euros (N2.09billion at N348 to a dollar) were found concealed in two banks – First Bank of Nigeria and First City Monument Bank, our sources said.

Yet another $5.4million (N1.67billion at N310 to a dollar) belonging to the NPA was moved to TSA accounts in the CBN different from those belonging to the maritime agency, insiders say.

It remains unclear what the new NPA management is doing to recover the funds, but our sources said Ms. Bala Usman already contacted Heritage Bank, First Bank and FCMB directing them to release the agency’s funds in their custody.

Heritage Bank’s officials were quoted to have claimed that releasing the funds might lead to the collapse of their bank.

When contacted, the NPA managing director confirmed that her team had been receiving briefings and looking into the books of the agency in the past weeks.
She said some revenue leakages and hidden funds had been located but that she was not ready to provide details because the minister supervising the authority had not been briefed.

PREMIUM TIMES became aware of the fraud in the NPA hours after Ms. Bala Usman indicated that her management would audit funds sunk into dredging projects.
Ms. Bala Usman made the disclosure to journalists at the end of her tour of Calabar port, which many stakeholders suggested should be dredged to accommodate bigger ocean-going vessels.

According to her, there is need to look at some of the funds expended on capital and maintenance dredging.

She said that funds used for such dredging projects in the past “should not be that high’’.
“It’s good time for us to compare capital dredging and maintenance dredging,’’ the News Agency of NIgeria quoted the managing director as saying.

An imam and his assistant were shot and killed in broad daylight as they walked home from a mosque in Queens.

Police said a gunman walked up to religious leader, Maulama Akonjee, 55, on Saturday afternoon as he and his assistant, Thara Uddin, 64, were leaving the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in Ozone Park.

Both men were rushed to Jamaica hospital, where Akonjee, a married father-of-three, was pronounced dead. His assistant died about fours later.

Imam Akonjee was described as a revered religious leader. He came to Queens from Bangladesh a little less than two years ago, according to the New York Daily News.

Earlier on Saturday, shortly after the shooting, a crowd of angry Muslim men gathered at the scene insisting it was a hate crime, saying the two men were specifically targeted.

That’s not what America is about,’ local resident Khairul Islam told the newspaper.

‘We blame Donald Trump for this … Trump and his drama has created Islamophobia.’

We Took The Best Economic Decision – Emefiele

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Saturday said the apex bank took the best monetary policy option in addressing the current economic challenges facing the country.

He also said that except Nigerians embrace fully the concept of diversification, the country would not be able to generate enough foreign exchange to cushion the effect of the drop in the value of the naira.

He further said the inability of the country to increase its stock of foreign exchange, owing to the drop in global oil prices, was the major reason for the persistent decline in the value of the naira against the dollar.

Emefiele, while speaking during an interview on the sidelines of a career conference in Abuja, said the Monetary Policy Committee of the CBN could not have taken a better decision in view of the current challenges facing the country.

The event, put together by The Everlasting Arms Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, had as its theme,” Your life, your future — not a laughing matter.”

The CBN governor who was responding to a question from journalists on the criticism of the CBN policy by eminent Nigerians, including the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, said it would be difficult for the apex bank to achieve price stability without the current monetary policy stance.

el-Rufai had on Wednesday faulted the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria to increase the Monetary Policy Rate from 12 per cent to 14 per cent.

He had said, “We have a Central Bank that has an MPR at 14 per cent and banks lending at 20 per cent. I have said it before and I will repeat it again, unless the Central Bank and the banking system make a conscious decision to bring the interest rate down, one day it would be legislated.”

Represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Mrs. Sarah Alade, the CBN governor said once the objective of price stability was achieved, the economy would begin to experience growth.

He said, “At this moment, what we are doing is what is best for the economy. The concern even among the youth is the slide in the value of the naira and I told them that we also need to diversify the economy so that we could have more exports; we are also supporting the efforts of the government on this. Once we are able to achieve this, we would have the kind of interest rate that we want.

“But at this particular time, to be able to get through the situation, we would have to take the decisions. And the Monetary Policy Committee considers all these factors before we take decisions.”

Earlier, the governor admonished the youth on the importance of hard work, dedication to excellence and perseverance in achieving one’s goal.

He said by imbibing these qualities, coupled with the requisite skills, they would be able to become great leaders in any area of their endeavours.

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has said that the country’s U-23 team will not receive any winning bonus, except the camp allowance all Team Nigeria athletes will be paid.

The Dream Team VI are in the semi-final of the men’s football competition, after beating Denmark 2-0 on Saturday.

But Dalung has confirmed that they will only get remaining camp allowances for 11 days.

“I spoke with the captain of the team John Mikel Obi and I explained to him that match bonuses are not paid to players except during the World Cup or Africa Cup of nations but not in Olympic or Commonwealth Games. This is their first appearance at the Olympics so the players may not know that they don’t pay match bonus at games,” he said.

“We have paid all outstanding camp allowance for the Rio Games qto the players so we owe them nothing. On the salaries of Siasia, the federation has admitted that they owe him for 5months. He was owed before he agreed to take the team to Atlanta so, making it an issue now after qualifying for the quarterfinals is not in the interest of the country.

“I have appealed to the coach and the players to put the country first before personal interest. All other issues that need to be addressed will definitely be addressed after the Olympics.”

According to Sahara Reporters, police officers are working to rescue him from his abductors.

The family hasn’t had any contact with the kidnappers yet.

Sunday Punch gathered that the toddler is currently on admission at Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta. Also the suspect is in custody of the Anti-Human Trafficking Department of the Command.

Olanrewaju had allegedly committed the crime at Onihale village along the old Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.

The biological mother of the victim was said to have divorced the father about two years ago,and the victim had been living with his stepmother and his father.

The stepmother was said to be in the habit of maltreating Iyanu.

The last straw was the recent attack on Iyanu, which resulted in fracture of the arm and leg, which made the neighbours to invite the police. The victim is said to have been on admission at the FMC, Abeokuta since Thursday, August 11.

The acting state Police Public Relations, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident,as well as the arrest of the suspect.

Actor Taiwo Hassan Laments Piracy, Poverty In Nollywood, Says Many Actors Can’t Feed Their Wives

It’s been long since we heard from popular actor, Taiwo Hassan, also known as Ogogo. He was once the poster boy of the Yoruba movie industry.

Though that was then, not a few things have changed. For Ogogo, as he is affectionately called, it is not a question of whether he has become less in demand by marketers but that the dynamism of movie-making has changed.

“I just can’t be chasing some jobs that are not worth it now. Imagine going to Ibadan now on fuel of about N30, 000, the producers don’t usually have the fund to pay for my hotel and I will lodge my personal assistants in hotels as well. I can’t commit to jobs that are not worth it. It is not every job that one gets to do at a certain stage in one’s life.”

Aside from that, Ogogo said piracy had caused a lot of actors to become impoverished. “No marketer can finance a movie project with a large amount of money. Imagine releasing a movie in the morning by 9am and by 2pm the pirated copies will be out. So, how do we get our royalties or how does the marketer recoup his investment?”

Speaking further on the impact of piracy, the tall and dark-skinned actor said many of his colleagues are now being fed by their wives. “We solely depend on God’s mercy now, and the goodwill of those who love us. Only few have small businesses of their own. As I speak, some actors are being fed by their wives. A big marketer in the industry told me when he wanted to release a Yoruba movie, some Igbo boys in Alaba told him to settle the pirates so they don’t pirate his movie. That is happening in a lawful society.”

Rejecting suggestions that movie stars are extravagant, Ogogo said they earned less than many people thought. ‘”Footballers and musicians make more money than actors. Actors are the least paid.”

Asked about his next line of action, Ogogo who still acts, said he was planning to go into farming.

“My parents were farmers. I have partially started the process of going into farming.”
